Recently two magpies were seen inspecting the herd of wisents like oxpeckers, picking ticks off their furs. For almost half an hour the two birds were inspecting the six wisents from head to foot, regularly finding ticks and eating them. The wisents undergo the doings of the magpies calmly.

The wisents at Kraansvlak seem to live well together with the other grazing animals, fallow deer, roe deer, goose and rabbit. Fallow deer and roe deer occur in quite large numbers and the number of rabbits seems to be increasing again.

Last week German, Danish, Dutch and Flemish experts on grazing paid a visit to Kraansvlak. During the two-day visit the experts were particularly interested in the public aspects of re-introduction of wisents.

A healthy calf was born in Bialowieza. In late autumn she will be transferred to the Netherlands together with both bison cows that stayed behind in Poland.

April 24, 2007 - ‘European bisons’ have arrived at Kraansvlak
Biologists and nature lovers have been dreaming for many years of the return of wild grazing animals, such as wisents, to Dutch natural areas. Since early 2004 plans have been made to bring wisents to the Kraansvlak dune area as natural grazers. Now, after more than 3 preparatory years, the dreams have become true: early this morning at 5am three wisents arrived in the sand dunes between Zandvoort and Bloemendaal.

April 4, 2007 - Rangers pay visit to Bialowieza
In preparation for the arrival of the wisents at the Kraansvlak in the dunes of South-Kennemerland, the PWN rangers team ‘South’ paid a visit to National Park Bialowieza in Poland. The aim of their visit was to get acquainted with these animals in their natural surroundings and to learn more about their behaviour.

March 7, 2007 - Prince Bernhard Culture Fund supports wisent project
The Prince Bernhard Culture Fund has granted 50,000 euros for accompanying research into the wisents that are to be released into the Kraansvlak area near Overveen in spring 2007. The grant is from the Robert Persman Fund, one of their culture funds bearing individual names.
