Wisentenpad 10 year anniversary
Wednesday 9th November 2022 marks the 10 year anniversary of the first visitors walking the ‘Wisentenpad’ (European bison trail). Of course after it was first officially inaugurated by the Queen's Commissioner for North Holland, Mr Johan Remkes and Mr Niek Meijer, mayor of Zandvoort!
Now, 10 years later, more than 50,000 people have walked the trail. This means that an average of 5,000 people walk the winding trail through the dunes every season in six months. From the trail marked with yellow posts you can spot European bison, Konik ponies and Highland cattle in their natural habitat. In addition, fallow deer, foxes, rabbits and other animals can also be seen quite regularly. A group of 10 enthusiastic volunteers are often out in the field to tell people about the European bison and answer any questions they may have. They also make sure people stay on the path, as wandering in this conservation area is not allowed.
Would you also like to walk this special trail? From 1 September to 1 March, the European bison trail Wisentenpad is open. It is a 3 km walk and consists partly of loose sand. Please visit www.wisenten.nl/nl/waar-zijn-ze to check in advance if the bison are near the yellow route. Enjoy the beautiful nature and please follow the area rules, indicated on the signs with access conditions at the entrances.
